Non-Citizen Voting In NYC

As of late, the New York City Council is readying legislation that will ultimately allow anyone who has come to the city for more than a few weeks to participate in the voting process for local elections.

What this means is that visitors like tourists, foreign students and even illegal immigrants will have the ability to cast a ballot for every election, including the presidential.

In years past, under the Bloomberg administration, the same type of legislation ended up failing to make any progress.

However, according to Councilmember Daniel Dromm, “the demographics of voters have changed over time, and this bill would just be the natural step in our nation’s voting history.”Non-Citizen Voting In NYC

This is due, in part, to the city’s current atmosphere of immigrant enablement.

One reason for this increase in immigration within the city is the newly introduced Municipal ID cards, which are government issued photo identification given to any resident of the city.

These cards were meant to help those people who lacked any official forms of identification such as the elderly, the transgendered, non-drivers and recent immigrants.

Ever since these cards became available, city offices have received an overwhelming amount of applications, the majority of those being illegal immigrants looking for a government form of ID. While voting was never actually touched on as a proponent of these cards, usages such as opening a bank account, accessing healthcare or entering government buildings like public schools.

Nonetheless, with the proposed new legislation, there is no doubt that the cards were a promoter of eliminating the barrier of letting anyone vote. Follow Honest Ballot Association on Twitter for information about our services and for the latest election news. Don’t forget to like us on Facebook!
